How to Insulate Windows for Winter

By insulating your windows, you can save on energy costs, reduce your utility bills and experience warmer indoor temperatures in the winter.

Keep reading to learn how to temporarily and permanently insulate windows for winter and when you should call in a professional to help with the insulation process.

How to Keep the Cold Out of Your Windows

For a quick and temporary way to insulate windows for winter, use bubble wrap:

  1. Cut medium- to large-sized bubble wrap to the size of your windows.
  2. Spray a film of water on the windows using a spray bottle.
  3. Apply the bubble wrap to the window (with the bubble side facing the glass) while it’s still damp and hold it in place.
  4. If the bubble wrap has trouble sticking to your window, hold it down with some double-back tape.
  5. To remove the bubble wrap, pull it off by starting from a corner.

Bubble wrap won’t leave any residue behind and can be reused during the following year.

Additional Ways to Insulate Windows

Other alternatives for window insulation include:

  • Window Insulation Film—This film is applied to the indoor window frame with double-back tape and heated, usually with a hairdryer, to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles.
  • Rubber Weather Sealing—These affordable strips fit the length of your window and keep out drafts during colder months.
  • Cellular Shades—These shades insulate your windows while still letting light through.

What Are Insulated Glass Units?

For a more permanent window insulation solution, consider installing Insulted Glass Units (IGUs). Commonly known as double-pane windows, IGUs are made to withstand extreme temperatures in the winter and summer.

In the winter, they retain heat by diffusing heat transfer within the air pockets, located between the panes. These air pockets reduce the window’s conductivity, resulting in a better-insulated home.

To ensure your unit isn’t exposed to moisture, the panes are held in place with a spacer made of a moisture-absorbent material called a desiccant. The entire unit is sealed to prevent any inner air from escaping.

Benefits of Double-Pane Windows

By installing double-pane windows in your home, you will experience the following benefits:

  • Reduction in noise pollution
  • Lower energy bills
  • Increased insulation within your home
  • Reduced risk of window condensation
