What is Insulated Glass?

High performance insulated glass units (IGUs) are an excellent addition to any home. Glass Doctor® Home + Business of Austin specializes in installing new double pane windows, a type of IGU, or replacing damaged panes. Insulated glass units are comprised of two or more pieces of glass and an insulating spacer. This spacer separates the two panes of glass while sealing the space between them; it is filled with a moisture absorbent material, called a desiccant.

To complete the installation, the entire unit is secured with a quality sealant to prevent condensation easily building up between the panes. Occasionally, either argon or krypton gas is added to the airspace between the two panes to provide additional insulation.

Insulated glass helps to balance the temperature in your home, and reduce heat exchange through windows. IGUs reduce cold winds and chills seeping in and minimize the sticky heat that spreads through the house.
