  • Lubricate moving parts for smoother operation

There are a variety of problems that can stop your storm door from closing properly. If you are currently experiencing issues where your storm door won't close, the experts at Glass Doctor are here to help! Keep reading to learn about the reasons why your storm door stays ajar and how to fix it.

Reasons Your Storm Door Won't Close

There are three key reasons a storm door may not stay closed:

  • Wear and Tear

Normal and daily use of your storm door can lead to eventual door damage and can pull the door loose. Any type of repeated wear and tear can loosen screws and lead to your storm door not closing.

  • Year-Round Weather

Your storm door protects your home 24/7/365 from everything from wind to snow and rain. These regular encounters with mother nature could be the reason why your storm door won't close properly.

  • Home Structure

As a house settles, door frames can become slightly crooked, catching door edges before it can close completely. It is often possible to straighten sagging door frames and hinges. Humidity can also prevent doors from closing correctly. If you think your doorway or other home structure issues could be due to swelling from humidity, it may be time to look into a home dehumidifier.

With a little elbow grease, the average homeowner can repair many of these problems. However, depending on the severity of an issue, it may be easier and more cost-effective to replace a storm door that does not close. Storm Door Repair Tips

Before you call in the professionals, there are several DIY steps you can take to help your door close on your own. Try the following tips to get your storm door to close.

  1. Reposition the Door Stop
Try repositioning the door stop mechanism on your storm door's pneumatic closer. That's the little tab that you slide across the rod to hold the door open. Make sure to slide the tab as close to the hinge side of the door as possible to ensure this is not what is holding your door open.
  2. Check for a Loose Door Frame
Open the door and jiggle it up and down a bit to see what's loose. If the door frame moves when you jiggle the door, drive 3/16 screws into the loose areas to re-secure the frame. Test to see if the door closes straight and tight.
  3. Check for a Loose Hinge(s)
If your door is still loose, it's time to tighten the hinge screws.
