Here's how to install sliding mirrored doors (a.k.a. bypass doors) in any room:
› Measure the width of the closet
› Trim the top and bottom track to size

Sliding mirrored doors help save space in small bedrooms. They're multi-purpose– the mirror reflects light, making the area seem brighter and larger; they cover up cluttered closet contents; and of course they double as a wardrobe mirror. Find more details about closet door installation below.
How to Install Sliding Closet Doors
For easier installation, purchase sliding closet doors that are already pre-sized for the doorframe. Go to the hardware store with the doorframe measurements so you can find a sliding mirror door that fits. Transport it home carefully!
Before you begin, open the packaging and make sure you have all the hardware and parts needed for installation. The tools and the complexity of the installation process will vary depending on the setup of the door and doorframe. Use this guide, along with the instructions provided by the manufacturer, to ensure proper installation.
Tools Needed
- Screwdriver
- Tape Measure
- Drill with bits
- Hacksaw
Measure and Install the Tracks
Measure the distance between the walls of the doorframe. Use a hacksaw to cut the top and bottom tracks to fit that size. Lay the bottom track between the walls. Position it according to the manufacturer's suggestions. In many cases, it's recommended that the track sit slightly inward (toward the back wall) from the top track.
Once the track is in position, use the screws provided to secure it to the bottom of the closet floor. Many door kits have different hardware to choose from depending on the type of floor you have:
- Carpet– If there is a wood subfloor, just use the screws provided. If you have a concrete subfloor, use plastic anchors along with the screws.
- Concrete– Pre-drill a hole with a masonry drill bit, and inset a plastic anchor with a screw.
- Wood– Use the screws provided to secure the track.
Install the top track by following the same instructions for the bottom track. Pay attention to track orientation– a specific side will need to be facing outward. Be sure it is properly aligned with the bottom track, which may be slightly offset if the instructions require it.
Install the Mirror Panels
The mirror panels have wheels on the bottom and guides on the top. Orient the panels accordingly, and install the rear (inside) panel first. Lift the panel into the top track first; then guide it to the bottom track.
Once the panel is in place, use a screwdriver to adjust the wheels that slide in the bottom track. The wheels should create enough tension that the doors slide smoothly, but not so much that the wheels bind in the track. Repeat this process with the other panel.
