- Size of the Damage: Though there are exceptions, generally any chip larger than 3/8 inch or cracks longer than three inches require replacement.
- Location of the Damage: Cracks that extend to the windshield's edge generally require replacement because they have a tendency to spread. Chips or cracks that directly impair sight lines also require replacement. Repair sometimes does not cure clearly and can leave a slight outline in the repaired area.
- Timespan: The longer your wait, the more likely replacement will be necessary. Dirt and grime can build-up-making repair unreliable or impossible.
