The Fourth of July or Independence Day of the United States, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire. Surprisingly, Congress did not declare July 4 a national holiday until 1870, almost 100 years after the Declaration was written and long after the parties began! We are now 50 states strong and the celebrations continue!

John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest.
